Restoring trust with deepfake detection

In the era of digital disinformation, deepfake detection technology is emerging as a bulwark to diminish the spread of manipulated content in contemporary media. To recapitulate, deepfakes use artificial intelligence to create falsified yet seemingly realistic videos or images. They predominantly constitute a video or audio recording that has been elaborated or altered using artificial intelligence for dishonest purposes. This term encompasses not only the content generated in this manner but also the technologies employed.

The term “deepfake” is a contraction of “Deep Learning” and “Fake,” which can be translated as “false depth.” Deepfakes have raised concerns regarding their potential to deceive the public and manipulate media discourses. It is important to note that they can manipulate public opinion in various ways by creating misleading visual or auditory content. Fortunately, deepfake detection tools exist today, often relying on sophisticated algorithms in addition to machine learning.

These tools are designed to meticulously analyze media for signs of manipulation. As the threat of deepfakes persists, these new technologies enable media outlets to verify content authenticity, prevent the dissemination of false information, and maintain journalistic integrity.

To achieve this goal, several companies and organizations are dedicated to developing deepfake detection technologies that leverage machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms.

Among these initiatives are actors such as Deepware Scanner, Microsoft Video Authenticator, and custom solutions developed by cybersecurity experts. The recommended approach also involves cross-verification by integrating multiple detection solutions.

This strategy, which combines different detection methods, improves the overall accuracy of the process and reinforces the reliability of the obtained results.
